Search for William C. Walker's Galloo Island Photo collection.

For an historical nonfiction book on the Galloo Islands of eastern Lake Ontario, I’m searching for some 100-plus photographs of the Galloo Islands taken by the Utica, New York microscopy scientist and photographer William C. Walker. The photographs were taken by Walker in the 1880s and 1890s.

Walked lived from 1864-1919. He was born in Leeds, England, moved to New York’s Mohawk Valley, and married into the Utica Peckham industrial manufacturing family.

An example of a William C. Walker photograph from 1888 at Galloo Island in Lake Ontario. Walker reportedly had a collection of more than 100 photographs taken at Galloo Island in the 1880s and 1890s. WDTimes. 1939.

A few of Walker’s photographs have been reproduced in newspapers. A file attributed to his pictures is at the New York Public Library, but it makes no mention of Galloo Island. Some of Walker’s Galloo Island photographs may also be held by descendants of Watertown, New York, schoolteacher Margaret Baker.

If you have information about the whereabouts of Walker’s Galloo Island photographs, please get in touch with me through the contact button at the top of this page.

Thank you.
